LIFE-savino. BOAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1913.
Application filed January 30, 1913. Serial No. 745,199.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON S. KOBLING, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at lVallingford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Life- Saving Boats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention. relates to a life saving boat especially designed for large ocean going vessels.
My invention aims to provide a metallic non-sinkable life saving boat that has novel means for preventing the boat from capsizing in a rough sea.
My invention further aims to provide a metallic life saving boat that has air tight compartments, a large seating capacity, and provision whereby it can be used as a raft, should the boat be accidentally capsized in launching.
My invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein :k
Figure 1 is a plan of the boat. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the boat, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the same.
A boat in accordance with this invention is made entirely of metal and the hull of the boat is formed by two side shells 1 having keel flanges 2 riveted or otherwise connected together. The shells 1 form a hull that is substantially V-shaped in cross section and the ends of the shells 1 converge to form a bow 3 and astern 4.
Secured to the shells 1 is a deck plate 5 which forms a flat bow and stern. The deck plate 5 is provided with a depressed portion 6 which forms a cabin or cock pit 7 for passengers. The deck plate 5 has the edges thereof flanged and riveted or otherwise secured to the shells 1 in order to form a rigid structure and air tight compartments in the bow and stern of the boat, also beneath the cock pit thereof, as shown in Fig. li.
The outer sides of the shells 1 are provided with longitudinally alining bearings 8 for longitudinal pivot rods 9 and pivotally edges thereof, are provided with outwardly extending brackets 14 and these brackets engage the cylinders or floats and maintain them in a horizontal position while the life boat is afloat. `When the life boat is not in use, the cylinders or floats can swing against the shells 1, whereby the life boat will occupy a comparatively small space upon the deck of a vessel.
Arranged transversely of the cock pit T are a plurality of metallic seats 15 having end flanges 16 riveted or otherwise connected to the longitudinal edges of the shells 1.
The air compartments of the life saving boat are sufficient to retain the same afloat, while the air tight cylinders or floats 12 prevent the boat from capsizing in a rough sea.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated and I reserve the right to make such structural changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A life saving boat comprising metallic shells having keel flanges secured together and forming a. hull substantially V-shaped in cross section, a deck plate flanged at its top and bottom arranged within and secured to said shells and depressed to provide a cock pit, longitudinally extending pivot rods carried by the outer sides of said shells, extensions pivoted upon said rods and provided with hoops, and longitudinally disposed air tight cylinders mounted in said hoops and having each end conical and projecting from a hoop.
2. A life saving boat comprising metallic shells having keel flanges secured together and forming a hull substantially Vshaped in cross section, a deck plate flanged at its top and bottom arranged within and secured to said shells and depressed to provide a cock pit, longitudinally extending pivot rods carried by the outer sides of said shells, extensions pivoted upon said rods and pro- In testimony whereof I aix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses. vided with hoops, longitudinally disposed air tight cylinders mounted in said hoops and having each end conical and projecting from a hoop, and outwardly extending brackets carried by the top edges of said shells and adapted to engage said Cylinders to limit the upward movement thereof.
