Beer, preserving. -A combined expansion chamber and closing-device for use in pasteurizing beer &c. in casks comprises a cap a which screws on to the bung m of the cask, and a channelled union b on to which screws the expansion chamber e, and which engages the channelled stopper c. Previous to pasteurizing, the flange of the stopper c is raised above the packing- ring h by operating the handles d of the union b so as to establish communication between the cask and the expansion chamber e through the channels l, i, at the same time excluding air by forcing the conical portion k of the union against the cap a. After the beer has been pasteurized and allowed to cool, the union b is operated to screw the stopper c against the packing - ring h. A pressure gauge may be attached to the nipple g of the chamber e.
