Stoppers, vacuum-closing.-In vacuum closures, the vessel is provided with a shoulder B upon which the lid is adapted to rest, an annular tapering recess D, Fig. 1, being left between the lid and the wall of the vessel, in which a packing-ring G is located. In exhausting the vessel, air escapes past the ring, the closure being subsequently completed by the atmospheric pressure forcing the ring more and more into the recess, as shown in Fig. 3. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, notches H in the lid provide access to the ring for breaking the closure, and these notches also permit the ring to rise more freely at these points during the exhaustion of the vessel.
