22,486. Longinus, L. W. Oct. 11. Stoppers, vacuum -closing.-The bottle &c. neck is formed with an internal shoulder b, upon which rests a cork ring c and a closing-disk d, provided with a central tube f, having a valve g at the top. A disk h, fitting the bottle neck and the tube f closely, is placed above the disk d, and a cap i is placed over the valve g. A liquid, such as glycerine, or an easily melted solid, is placed in the space R, and the bottle is heated as usual to expel the air, which escapes by the valve g. On cooling, the liquid from the space R enters the cap i and produces an hermetic closure. In a modification, an ordinary cork, fitted with a valve tube such as f, is pushed well into the neck of a bottle &c. so as to leave a space above the cork corresponding with the space R. The seal is then completed as described with a cap i and liquid.
