Abstract

25,486. Radbrach, H. C. Nov. 23. Stoppers. - A plug stopper, for bottles, jars, cans, &c., is provided with a packing- washer, which, on the stopper being forced into its closing position in the mouth of the vessel, forms a tight joint between the stopper and the neck. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stopper 2 and washer 4 are preferably of circular section, and the stopper has two grooves 5 separated by an annular swelling on the stem. The lower end 6 of the stopper is preferably made conical, to facilitate the washer being passed over it, and of such size that the washer, in passing over it, makes one revolution, and then lies in the lower groove 5. The neck of the vessel is formed with an internal groove 7. When the stopper is forced down into the neck, the washer rolls from the lower groove 5 into the upper groove in the stopper, and also enters the groove 7, as shown in Fig. 2, where it forms a hermetic joint between the neck and stopper. When the receptacle is to be heated, the stopper may be placed without pressure in the neck, where it will retain its position during the escape of the steam, vapours, &c, To give further support to the stopper during this operation, the inner edge 9 of the mouth of the receptacle may be recessed or inclined, as shown, to provide a seat for the washer. The diameter of the end 6 of the stopper may be substantially equal to the internal diameter of the neck, so that, when the receptacle contains sterilized milk or corrosive liquid, it serves to prevent appreciable contact between the contents and the washer. The stopper may be made of porcelain, glass, &c., and the part of the stem between the grooves 5 may be roughened or left unglazed to prevent the washer from sliding during the insertion of the stopper. To obviate risk of fracture, the groove 7 is made nearer to the lip of the receptacle than the upper groove 5 is to the head of the stopper, so that the bead does not come in contact with the lip. A number of receptacles may be stoppered simultaneously by pressure applied through a long bar or the like to the heads of the stoppers.
