Abstract

1390. Mills, B. J.- B., ['Itala' Fabbrica di Automobili]. Jan. 18. Clutches; universal joints. -In the multiple-plate friction clutch shown, which is applicable to automobiles &c., the doublecylindrical sleeve 3 is secured to the driven shaft 5 and carries a series of plates 16 alternating with similar plates 15 on the flywheel drum 1. A spring 14 bearing on the cover 12 normally presses the plates together, disengagement being effected by moving the shaft 5 and sleeve 3 longitudinally by means of the lever 19 engaging a keyed sleeve 7, which carries rollers 9 engaging in slots in the head 11 of the transmission shaft, thus forming a universal joint. To facilitate disengagement, the plates 15, 16 are made of elastic material and those of one series are slightly cylindrically dished.
