Abstract

19. Wetherell, R. E. C. Jan. 1. Glutches, friction.-In plate friction clutches, a driving-plate a rotates between a plate b fixed to the driven shaft e and a second plate c loose thereon, free friction plates l being provided. Balls h carried by a collar f on the plate b engage wedge grooves j in the plate c, or any similar wedge device may be used, in order that when the plate c is rotated by friction with the plate a or by means of a spring connecting the parts c, f, the plate a is gripped between the plates b, c. For disengagement, a sliding bar o engaging slots n in the plates b, c is moved to bring the slots into register. Inclines r permit gradual engagement of the clutch. In order to provide for drive in both directions, the grooves j are tapered in both directions, and a helical spring friction plate is placed between the plates a, c to rotate the plate c by friction with the plate a. The clutch may run in an oil bath.
