Abstract

639,904. Ratchet clutches. GARRETT CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1948, No. 2320. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1946. [Class 80 (ii)] A clutch which drives in both directions and releases the driven member automatically for movement in both directions on cessation of drive torque, e.g. to permit emergency manual drive in the event of power failure in actuators for flaps, doors, and undercarriages, on aircraft, comprises a pair of elongate pawls 25 each having friction surfaces at both ends, moved radially in opposite directions into frictional engagement with a surrounding driven drum 19 by a toothed pinion 16 forming the end of a driving shaft engaging rack-teeth on the pawls, or by a cam engaging notches therein, Fig. 4, not shown, As the pawls 25 move outwardly, free rollers 24, engaging recesses in the pawls, cam them apart. increasing the grip, and in the absence of drive-torque, U-shaped wire springs 31 draw the pawls 25 together on the rollers thus retracting them from the driven drum 19. A conical spring, Fig. 1, not shown, presses the pawls axially against a fixed friction-plate carried by the stationary housing 22 to provide drag for initiating engagement.
