Water-tube boilers ; headers; tubes, water.- Series of horizontal tubes 1 closed at one end are connected to headers 2, the steam spaces of which communicate with each other through tubes 9, and the pipes 18, 19, connecting their water spaces, are so placed that, when the boiler is working, the tubes 1 are only partly filled with water. The headers may be formed in pairs, a single chamber 2 having an internal partition, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or they may form distinct chambers. In another modification, a series of headers has common walls to which are riveted internal partitions. The tubes 9 may pass through the water spaces of the headers, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may be placed externally. In the former case, baffles 2, Fig. 6, are placed inside the tubes in order to dry the steam. The upper parts of the water tubes are protected by fire-clay coverings, which, in alternate rows, are formed as caps 14, and in other rows constitute baffles 16. A fire-clay wall 22 protects the headers from contact with the hot gases.
