Abstract
23,673. Aitken, R. Nov. 5. Sectional boilers. -In a boiler consisting of inclined water tubes a traversed longitudinally by fire tubes b, the water and fire tubes of the sections are connected directly to plain tube-plates c, which form the front and rear walls of the combustion chamber. Communication between the sections is established by small chambers g, which are fixed to the tubeplates over the adjacent parts of annular spaces f formed by the flanged ends of the water-tubes. The top of the combustion chamber is closed by a fire-brick wall l, and the front tube-plate has a protective fire-brick covering m. The furnace gases pass upwards among the sections through an opening k<1> in the furnace crown. They escape from the combustion chamber through openings i in the back tube-plate and enter the rear flue space j, from which they pass through the fire-tubes to the up-take n at the front of the boiler. The opening k<1> may be arranged at the back of the furnace, and the combustion chamber may be provided with baffles which cause the gases to pass upwards and downwards in the chamber and finally to escape below the lowest section, the openings i in the rear tube-plate being dispensed with
