SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,019, dated August 14, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOSEPH HALLETT, re siding at 108 Fenchurch street, and GEORGE HALLIDAY, residing at 23 Alfred Place, Bedford Square, in the city of London,England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to water-tube boilers of the kind having one or more steamgenerating elements or sections (hereinafter called elements) arranged within a suitable casing and comprising or each comprising two water chambers or headers (hereinafter called headers) connected to one or more steam and water drums arranged above them, inclined water-tubes connecting the inner walls of said headers and arranged above a fire grate or grates, and flue-tubes connecting the outer walls of the headers and extending centrally through the water-tubes, or some of them, so as to form therewith annular waterspaces, the arrangement being such that flame and hot gases can pass over and among the water tubes and also through the flue-tubes on their way to the chimney.
The present invention has reference to improvements in the construction and arrangement of such boilers, to means whereby the hot gases can at will be caused to flow over and among the water-tubes and thence direct to the chimney or through the flue-tubes and thence to the chimney or partly over the Water-tubes to the chimney and partly through the flue tubes to the chimney and the proportion between the two streams of hot gasesregulated to suit varying requirements, and to certain improveddetails of construction,'all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the construction of watertube boiler shown there are three elements, each con- Serial No. 732,364. (No model.)
sisting of a front header a, a rear header 1), inclined Water-tube a, suitably secured to the inner walls (1 of the two headers, as by expanding them in holes therein, and inclined flue-tubes e, that extend through some of the tubes and are detachably connected, as hereinafter described, to the outer walls f of the headers. Each element is arranged transversely within a casing 9 above a fire-grate h and below a longitudinally-arranged steam and water vessel'i,(hereinaftercalled astea1ndrum,) to which the upper ends of the front and rear headers a and b are respectively connected by downtake-pipes k and uptake-pipes Z, the downtake-pipes 70 being connected to the bottom of the steam-drum and the uptakepipeslto the side thereof preferably just above the normal water-level therein. The element and easing g are so relatively arranged as to form a rear smoke-box m and a front smokebox a, each smoke-box being provided with a door, whereby ready access can be gained to the adjacent header and tubes. The rear smoke-box m is closed at the top by a cover 0 of refractory material and is in communication at the bottom by a large'rear passage 10 with the rear end of the combustion-channber q directly above the grate h, and the front smoke-box n is closed at the bottom and is in communication at the top witha gas-exit passage 8, that leadsto the base of a chimney or uptake t and is controlled by a damperj, provided with suitable operating means whereby it can be opened and closed. The top of the space between the headers and abovethe water-tubes is separated from the passage 5 and chimney t by a cover a of rev fractory material, in which is a large hole 1;,
controlled by a damper w, fixed to a rockshaft 00, extending to one or both ends of the boiler-casing and provided with suitable operating means, such as a hand wheel or lever y, whereby the damper can be opened or closed at will.
With the arrangement described it will be readily understood that by fully opening the damper 10 and closing the damperj the whole of the flame and hot gases'from the fire on the fire-grate It will be caused to flow over and among the Water-tubes 'c and through the opening o direct to the chimney t, and that by closing the said damper w and opening the damperj the wholev of the gases will be caused to flow through the rear passage 1), rear smokebox m, flue-tubes e, and smokebox or to the passage 3 and thence to the chimney, while by partly opening both dampers the hot gases will be caused to divide, part passing among the watertubes and through the opening t to the chimney t direct and part flowing through the rear passage to the rear smoke-box m and through the flue-tubes 6, front smoke-boxn, and passage s to the chimney, the quantity of gases passing by each route being capable of easy adjustment by regulating the positions of the two dampers.
To facilitate the passage of flame and hot gases to the rear smoke-box on, the rear passage is or may advantageously be provided with a hood 1, of refractory material, arranged to extend over the rear portion of the firegrate h and which may conveniently be supported in position by the side walls 2 of the combustion-chamber q, which for this purpose are formed with side recesses, into which the sides of the hood can be readily pushed from the rear.
The lower water-tubes 0 may, as shown, be without flue-tubes and be arranged at a suitable distance below the water-tubes above them, so as to form a supplementary combustion chamber or space 3 above the combustion-chamber (1 directly above the fire-grate h. The walls of each header may be strengthened at points opposite the ends of the supplementary combustion chamber or space 3 by stays 4, fixed to the inner walls at of the headers and secured to the outer walls f thereof by nuts 5. Baffle-plates 6, of refractory material, are or may be placed between the water-tubes at different levels, so as to insure a good distribution of the flame and hot gases among such tubes and to offer sufficientresistance to the hot gases to insure that some of them Will pass through the rear smoke-box m to the fire-tubes c, and thence through the front smoke-box n to the chimney if when the damper w is open. In the example shown the lower portion of the steamdrum 7} and also the downtake-tubes 7c and the uptake-tubes Z are located in the passage s, so as to be exposed to the hot gases flowing through such passage to the chimney i; but the said parts might be otherwise arranged.
A construct-ion of headers specially suitable for use in elements forming parts of steam-generators according to this invention forms the subject of a separate application for Letters Patent filed January 20, 1900, Serial No. 2,136.
When two or more elements are employed, they may be arranged side by side over separate fire-grates h and within separate compartments of the casing 9, so that each of them maybe worked independently of the other or others. The lower header is or may be provided at its lower end with a blow-off passage 18, Fig. 2, leading to a mud-drum 19, Fig. 1, and when two or more elements are used the lower parts of the adjacent lower headers may be connected together by a pipe 20, Fig. 1, secured in flanged holes 21 in the side walls of the headers, the outer side wall of one of the end headers being connected by a similar flanged part to a pipe 22, the arrangement being such that mud collecting in the bottoms of the lower headers can be readily discharged into the mud-drum 19 or other receptacle.
As will be obvious, various changes can be made in the details of construction of the boiler without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention so long as the relative arrangement of parts shown in the drawings or the mode of operation described in the specification is preserved.
What we claim is-- 1. In a steam-boiler, the combination of a steam generating element comprising two headers, water-tubes connecting the inner walls of said headers, and flue-tubes connecting the outer walls of said headers, a steamdrum connected to said headers, a casing wherein said header is located, a combustionchambcr, an uptake, smoke-boxes located at the front and rear of said element, one of said smoke-boxes being in communication at the bottom with said combustion-chamber and the other being in communication at the top with said uptake, a plate or cover arranged above said element and formed with a gasexit opening leading to said uptake, and a damper adapted to control said gas-exit opening, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
2. Asteam-boilerhavingoneormoresteamgenerating elements of the kind herein described, a steam'drum connected to said elements, a casing surrounding said element or elements and provided with a plate or cover arranged above said element or each element and formed with a gas-exit opening, a damper for controlling said opening, an uptake located above said opening, smoke-boxes at the front and rear of said element, a combustion-chamber in communication at its rear end with one of said smoke-boxes, a gas-exit passage in communication with the top of the other smoke-box and with said uptake, and a damper for controlling said communication, substantially as described.
3. A steam-boiler having a steam-generating element of the kind herein described, a steam-drum connected to said elements, a fire-grate and combustion-chamber below said element, an uptake above said element, a casing surrounding said element and provided with a gas-exit opening at the top communicating with said uptake, a damper for con trolling said opening,smoke-boxes at the front and rear of said element the front smoke-box communicating at the top with said uptake and the rear smoke-box communicating at the bottom with the rear end of said combustion chamber, and a hood located in the passage between the combustion-chamber and rear smoke-box and extending over the rear end of said fire-grate, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
4. A steam-boiler comprising steam-generating elements of the kind herein referred to, a steam-drum connected to said elements, a casing surrounding said elements and forming therewith front and rear smoke-boxes, a plate or cover with gas-exit openings above each element, a damper for controlling each of said openings, a combustion-chamber and fire-grate below each element, an uptake and gas-exit passage located above said elements and in communication with the top of each front smoke-box, a damper controlling said gas-exit passage, passages whereby the rear smoke-boxes communicate with the rear ends of said combustion-chambers, hoods located within said passages and extending'over the rear ends of said fire-grates, a steam-drum located above said elements, and uptake anddowntake pipes connecting said steam-drum to the headers of the elements, substantially as described.
5. In asteam-boiler a steam-generating element having two headers each provided with a single removable outer Wall. inclined watertubes connecting the innerwalls of said headers,and flue-tubes extending through said water-tubes and removably connected to the outer walls of said headers, a roof or cover extending over the space between said headers and formed with a gas-exit opening, a chimney with which said ,space can communicate through said opening, a combustion-chamber below said element, a steam-drum located above and connected to said headers, smokeboxes arranged at the front and rear of said element and provided with doors, one of said smoke-boxes being closed at the top and in free communication with said combustionchamber and the other being closed at the bottom and having a gas-exit opening at the top,
and dampers for controlling the said gas-exit openings, substantially as described.
6. In a steam-boiler, the combination of steam-generating elements of the kind herein referred to, arranged with their water and flue tubes in an inclined position, a steamdrum located above and connected to said elements, a mud-receptacle below said ele-' ments, tubular connections between the lower parts of adjacent lower headers, and a tubular connection between the outer side Wall of one of the end headers and said mud-drum, substantially as described.
7. A steam-boiler comprising steam-generating elements of the kind herein referred to, a casing surrounding said elements and forming therewith front and rear smoke-boxes n and m of which the former are closed at the bottom and open at the top and the latter are open at the bottom and closed at the top, a cover to with gas-exit opening thereinabove each element, achimneyor uptake 25, arranged above said elements,asteam-drum 'i above said elements, uptake-tubes Z connecting the upper headers of the said elements to said steam drum, downtake-tubes h connecting the lower part of said steam-drum to the lower headers of said elements, a fire-grate p and combus tion-chamber (1 below each element, a passage p between the rear end of each combustion-chamber and the lower end of said rear smoke-box m, a hood Z of refractory material located in said passage and extending over the rear end of said fire-grate, and dampers w and j for controlling the exit of gases from between the headers of each element and the front smoke-box, substantially as described.
