PATENT OFFICE.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPEGIFIGATIQNforming part of Letters P atent No. 735,427, dated August 4, 1903.
Application filed May 12, 1899. Serial No. 716,484. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ISAAC THORNY- CROFT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Church Wharf, Ohiswick, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented Improvements in Steam- Boilers, of which the following is a specification. 1 i r According to thisinvention in a water-tube steam-boiler of the so-called. Daring type (see Thornycrofts patent, No. 452,401) there are provided externally of the casing downflow-tubes which connect the upper steam and water vessel-with the outer lower water vessels. Also the smallersteam-generating tubes which connect each of the outer lower vessels with the upper vessel are so disposed that some of them form two flues, in which the other tubes are located, and the products of combustion from each'fire-box pass partly' into the lower part of an inner flue formed by tubes and partly intothe lower part of the corresponding outer fiue formed by tubes.
The products of combustion risingwithin each inner flue and the corresponding outerflue' unite in the upper part of the outer flue and flow thence through channels formed by and between suitable walls or casings tothe chimney, the arrangement being such as to. pro
tect that part of the wall of the upper vessel.
which is above the water-levelfrom the d i rect action of the products of combustion.
For the purpose of enabling my invention onjthe line as w of Fig. 2looking toward the.
front end of the boiler, and Fig. 2shows'a side elevation of the boiler. l p
The boiler here represented by way of example comprises an upper steam and water nal downflow-tubes 6, arranged at intervals (in one or more rows) in the length of the boiler, while external downflow tubes 7', which are arranged at the front end only of the boiler, connect the lower part of the upper vessel to the upper parts of the lower vessels 2 2 The smaller of the bent tubesviz., 4--which connect the central lower vessel 2 and the upper vessel 1, enter the latter at opposite sides of the longitudinal center of the boiler. These tubes are arranged in rows, whereof the two inner rows L -4'. e., those nearest to the vertical plane of the longitudinalcenter of the boilerand the two outer rows 4 z'. e., those next to the fire-box 3-are bent to form (excepting as to their ends) tube-walls which constitute flues 8, wherein theinterveuing tubes 4 are arranged in rows. The two inner walls formed by the rows of tubes 4 serve to protect from the direct action'of the products of combustion the before mentioned down flow-tubes 6, whereby the upper andcentral lower vessels 1 and 2 are connected, and which tubes are located within a central chamber 8, formed between the two inner tube-walls. .Each of the outer lower vessels2 2 -is connected with the upper vessell also by several rowsof tubes, whereofthe two outer rows 5 and the two inner rowstBare made to form (excepting as to the ends of the tubes) walls of a flue 9, within which the remaining tubes 5 are arranged in rows.
The outer wall of each inner flue 8 and the inner wall of each outer flue 9 meet at a suitable distance above the fire-grate, as at 10.
The lower portions of the tubes constituting these respective walls are so arranged as to provide-spaces 11 between the wall-tubes, whereby products of combustion can enter the respective fines 8 and 9, up which they flow. The upper portions of the tubes of both walls of each outer flue 9 and those of the outer wall of each inner flue 8 are arranged to afiord spaces 12 between those portions of the said tubes for the upward flow of the products of combustion in directions at tions of the tubes. The arrangement is such ICO that the hot gases which have ascended within'the inner flues 8 join, in the upper. portions of the outer flues 9, the hot gases that have ascended within the said fines 9. From this locality the gases pass away to the chimney 13 through suitable channels 14, formed by and between walls or casings and 15*. The inner of these walls or casingsviz., 15 is arranged at some distance from the outer surface of the top portion of the upper vessel- 1, so as to protect that part of the said vessel from the direct action of the products of combustion.
16 is the ordinary boiler-casing.
Within the upper vessel 1 there are or may be plates 1 for deflecting water and steam, also plates 1 for deflecting water and steam from the downflow-tubes 6, and an arrangement for separating from the steam water that has been carried up with the steam. The steam-separating arrangement can be of various kinds, but may advantageously consist of inner and outer longitudinal pipes 17 and 18, arranged concentrically one within the other, so as to leave between them. an annular space or chamber 19, that is in communication with the interior of the vessel 1 through slits or openings at 20 in the outer pipe 18 and with the steam -main through slits or openings at 2L in the inner pipe 17, a longitudinal partition 22 separating the two sets of slits or openings 20 and 21, and one or more openings being also provided in the outer pipe 18 at 23 for conducting water that has become separated from the steam in the space or chamber 19 into a casing or box 24, whence it can flow by a pipe 25, having a non-return valve, into the water-space of the vessel 1, as more fully described in Letters Patent No. 657,968, granted to me'September 18, 1900.
