STEAIvI-GENERA'IQR FITTED VJITH S'UPERHEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Application filed December 23, 1-916. Serial No. 138,662.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, .JAMES HoWnnN Home, a subject of the King ofthe United Kingdom of Great Britain andlreland, and residing at Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and'useful Improvement in Steam- Generators Fitted with Eiuperheaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in steam generators, more particularly multisectional steam generators of the type comprising water drums connected by upright tubes to steam and water drums ex tending rearwardly of the water drums above a combustion chamber situated rearwardly of said tubes, as described for eX- ample in the specification of United States Letters Patent No. 1066111.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement of superheater such that the superheater is protected from direct impingement by the hottest products of combustion, and that the degree of superheat may be regulated, or the superheater put wholly out of use when superheated steam is not required.
To this end, according to the invention, the superheater or each of several superheaters is interposed between adjacent generator elements, being wholly contained in a flue intermediate adjacent elements or partly contained in such flue and partly in lateral extensions of the combustion chambers of such elements, communication be tween the combustion chambers and the superheater chamber being by way of checker brick-work or the like the openings in which may be more or less closed so as to control or stop the passage of gases to the superheater.
Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing are vertical sections at right angles to one another showing a generator and superheaters.
As shown, the generator proper comprises lower water drums 1 connected to upper water and steam drums 2 by upright tubes 3 fitted into tube plates connected to the drums 1 and 2.
The lower drums 1 are mounted above and extend rearwardly of the grates, the upper drums extending rearwardly of the lower drums and roofing combustion chambers situated rearwardly of the upright tubes 3.
v6 denotes a steam collecting drum coupled to and disposed transversely of the drums 2.
Led from the upper part of the steam collecting drum 6 are pipes 7 coupled to headers 8 receiving the upper ends of pref erably U-shaped superheating tubes 9 of which the opposite ends are connected to headers 10 from which are led pipes 11 to a valve casing or casings 12 fitted or each fitted with a steam stop valve.
As shown, the U-tubes 9 are partly contained in fines intermediate the stacks of upright tubes 3 and partly in spaces between the combustion chambers of adjacent elements, the passage of hot combustion products being by way of checker brickwork 14. The superheater tubes 9 are shielded, to some extent, from the hottest products of combustion by protecting shelves 16 below the forward or U-shaped parts of said tubes. The openings in the checker brick work 14 may be more or less closed, as hereinbefore stated, as by loose bricks or the like, to regulate or control the passage of gasses from the combustion chamber to the flue.
The openings 18 in the checker brick work wall 1 1 affords a direct passage at the rear of the horizontal flue or fiues 19 with the combustion chamber 20 at the rear of the generator, and said flues communicate at their front ends with the uptake chamber 21 through which the products of combustion escape. As in the said checker brick work 14; the said openings may be more or less closed or may be stopped up entirely by loose bricks or the like, inserted from the said combustion chamber, when the tire is out, it is obvious that the passage of hot gasses to the said dues, in which the superheaters are partly arranged, may be regulated or controlled as may be desired, or may be shut off practically altogether.
15 denotes orifices permitting access of soot-cleaning devices for cleaning the eX- terior surfaces of the superheater tubes, etc.
What I claim is:-
1. In combination, a multi-sectional steam generator, each section comprising a pair of drums one above the other, stacks of upright tubes connecting the drums of each pair, a combustion chamber beneath the upper drums and rearward of said tubes, said stacks of tubes being s aced apart to aiford a horizontal flue between the tubes of adjacent sections, said flue communicating at its front end with the uptake, a checker brick-work wall between the rear end of said flue and said combustion chamber, said checker brick-work wall presenting readily closable openings for passage of combustion products from said combustion chamber to said flue, and a superheater located between two adjacent sections and comprising a series of U-shaped tubes contained at least partly in said flue.
2. In combination, a multi-sectional steam generator, each section comprlsing a pair of drums one above the other, stacks of upright tubes connecting the drums of each pair, a combustion chamber beneath the upper drums and rearward of said tubes, said stacks of tubes being spaced apart to afford a horizontal flue between the tubes of adjacent sections, said flue communicating at products from said combustion chamber to said flue, a superheater located between two adjacent sections and comprising a series of U-shaped tubes contained partly in said flue and partly in said combustion chamber, and means, located below said superheater tubes within said combustion chamber, for protecting the same from the hottest combustion products.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JAMES HOWDEN HUME.
