Abstract

28,750. Tyler, R. G. Dec. 29. Sights; ordnance, discharging by means external to breech mechanism.-Relates to sights principally for naval guns, and to means combined therewith for automatically firing one or more guns of a battery when the latter are correctly layed. The sights, which may be at a distance from the gun, consist of a telescope A, Fig. 1, carried by a quadrant B, pivoted at c to a support C pivoted on a vertical axis D on a frame mounted on trunnions F in a gimbal ring G. The seat M for the gun-layer depends from the support C, which is maintained in a vertical position by a gyroscope R. An arm J pivoted at c is set by a hand-wheel S and pinion, so that the angle between the line of sight and the arm corresponds to the angle of elevation to be given to the gun. At its outer end, the arm is jointed to the piston-rod K of an hydraulic cylinder L, connected by a pipe l with a similar cylinder L', Fig. 3, on the gun-carriage B, so that an alteration in the position of the arm J is transmitted in a corresponding degree to a pointer J<1> pivoted concentrically with the trunnions of the gun. The cylinder L is carried by an arm 0 pivoted at N to the depending arm M. The arm O is connected by suitable means to the piston-rod P<1> of a hydraulic cylinder P, connected by a pipe p to a similar cylinder P<2> mounted upon a fixed support near the gun. When the sight is traversed by a worm and worm-wheel U, the movement is transmitted by the hydraulic cylinders P, P<2> to a radial arm O<1>, and through the vertical shaft H to an arm I. The arms I, J<1> are provided with contact-points at their ends, which coincide with contacts on the gun and complete the electric firing-circuit when the gun is correctly layed. Mountings.-Means are described whereby the elevation and training of the gun are automatically effected by the movement of the sighting-gear, so that the gun is aimed concurrently with the aligning of the sights upon the target.
