Sights and methods of sighting. - Relates to sighting - apparatus arr a n g e d longitudinally with respect to the axis of the gun barrel, and consists in mounting the sight so that its eyepiece remains practically stationary during the operation of laying the gun. For this purpose, the telescopic or bar sight is so mounted that for elevation it turns about an axis coincident with the gun trunnions and passing through t h e longitudinal axis of the sight at or near the eyepiece; the axis about which the sight is deflected is also at or near the eye - piece. In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the crossconnected sights E are each mounted in a carrier E<1> turning about the vertical axis z of the pin e<1> in the sightbracket E<0>. The sights may be deflected about the axes z by the hand-wheel F<1Î>, acting through suitable gearing co-operating with the extensions EX of the sight-carriers E', and may be elevated about the axis x, coinciding with the axis of the trunnions B' by means of a hand-wheel F<Î>, actuating, through the usual rack and pinion or other arrangement, the sight-bars e‹ extending from the sight-brackets E‹. In a modification, shown in Fig. 7, the sector f, in a casing F<2> provided with a slot f<2> concentric with the trunnion B', is connected to the sight-bracket E‹ by a lateral member f<0>, and is actuated by the elevating hand-wheel F<Î> through the pinion f<Î>. In the slot f<2> engages a roller on an arm F<0>, connected to the sight-bracket E<0> and giving additional support thereto. The invention is not restricted to cross-connected sights.
