Abstract
2217. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Jan. 28. Sights.-Relates to sights, for targets situated above or below the gun platform, of the kind described in Specification 20,243/09, and consists in arranging for the cam described in the above-mentioned Specification to be held stationary when the sight is set for range, so that no correcting-movement is communicated to the range pointer during this operation. Fig. 1 shows an elevation of the sight seen from the side of the gun, and Fig. 2 shows a section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 1. The cam D is mounted on a quick-pitched screw C surrounding the trunnion extension a and connected with the gun-carriage by an arm c. Fixed to the trunnion extension a is a worm-sector H<1> relatively to which the sight bracket H<Î> may be rotated to set the sight G for range by operating the worm h' from a hand-wheel H. During the operation, the cam D, connected with the sector H' by a key d', remains stationary, and the roller f<1> which conveys the correcting-motion to the range-pointer F<Î> bears on a portion d of the cam concentric with the trunnion axis. When the gun is elevated, the sight is brought on to the target, the cam D is moved transversely on the screw C, and a correcting-motion is conveyed to the pointer F<Î> through the roller f and links f<1>, f<3>. During this operation, the sight is deflected by the engagement of a pin g<Î> on the stationary groove E. To compensate for variations in range and drift due to change in air density, the casing carrying the screw C and groove E may be adjusted relatively to the gun mounting by means of a micrometer screw.
