Abstract
15,289. Beardmore & Co., W., and Bremberg, A. June 26. Sights and methods of sighting.-Relates to sighting-devices principally for correcting the aim of anti-aircraft guns. and consists in mounting the gun-layer's sight so that it is moved parallel to an auxiliary sight controlled by an independent observer, who adjusts his sight about a universal joint at the rear end on to the indication of the point struck by the previous shell. The aim is therefore corrected when the gun-layer adjusts the gun, keeping the target in view. Fig. 1 shows in plan the gun-layer's sight B and the observer's sight C fixed parallel to one another upon a bracket A' adjustable through a ball joint A<2>, C<3> with respect to a bracket A on the gun cradle. The forward end of the sight C is carried by a member E<6> adjustable diametrically with respect to a member E by means of gearing, which is operated from a hand-wheel G<6> and actuates, through the pinion G<4> sleeve G<1>. and skew gearing G, E<5>, a screw E<1> engaging a nut connected with the member E<6>. as shown in Fig. 3. The member E<c> is rotatable in a sleeve A<3> on the bracket A by worm gearing H, H<2> operated from a hand-wheel H <4>. The tube C carries a normally horizontal cross-wire J with a central bead J<1>, and a normally vertical crosswire J' for use with scales j<2> . The sights are first set with respect to the axis of the gun, and the gun laid in the ordinary way. The observer then the hand-wheel H<4> and rotates the tube C until the oross-wire J intersects the image of the point last struck. The bead J<1> on the cross-wire is then brought into coincidence with this image, or the cross-wire J<4> is brought on to a part of the scale J<2> observed to be opposite the image, by operating the hand-wheel G<6>, which serves to swing the tube C diametrically. The observer's sight is preferably viewed from the side through an extension C<2> at right-angles to the tube C.
