Abstract
464,543. Gun mountings; sights. PRECISION MODERNE. May 28, 1936, No. 15129. Convention date, May 29, 1935. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to machine-gun mountings adapted for anti-aircraft fire and of the kind having in addition to the usual elevating and training gears for aiming the gun 6, Fig. 3, about the pivots 4, 2 respectively, a third lateral aiming gear for moving the gun about a pivot 8 at right-angles to the axis of the pivot 4 and to the gun axis. According to the invention, the lateral aiming gear and the usual training gear are operated by means of a common control wheel 12, the change from one gear to the other being effected by a clutch, such as 22, operated either by hand or automatically at a certain angle of elevation. Fig. 3 shows the gun mounted in a false cradle 7 pivoted at 8 in a cradle 5 movable about trunnions 4 in a carriage turning on a vertical pivot 2. The clutch 22 permits the drive from the hand wheel 12 to be applied either to the normal training gear 17 or to the shafting 31, 35 for driving the worm gear 10, 9 that effects movement of the false cradle 7 about the pivot 8. In a modification, the clutch lever 22 forms part of the grip of the hand wheel 12. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the-clutch 25 is operated at a certain angle of gun elevation by a projection 46 on the cradle 5 through the gearing and linkage shown. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes with reference to Fig. 3 means for varying the angle between the axes of the gun 6 and sight 77. The sight is controlled by a telescopic rod 79, the lower end of which is' universally jointed to a member adjustable on a horizontal platform 67. The upper part of the rod 79 is gimbal-jointed to a frame 68 pivoted at 70 to a bracket 69 on the trunnion axis 4 and kept parallel to the gun by a sliding rod 71. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
