Abstract

291,782. Pedersen, J. D. June 9, 1927, [Convention date]. Sights.-A rear sight for rifles comprises a vertically adjustable range slide 171 carrying a transversely adjustable windage slide 173, in which is the sight aperture 174. The vertical slide 171 is mounted in grooves on a part of the receiver 2 of the gun, and is attached to a stem 191, which rests over a spring plunger 196 in the stock 1. This spring takes up any backlash in the adjusting gear of the vertical slide, which gear comprises a rack 183 attached to the receiver and a worm 180 rotatable on a hollow spindle 181 on the slide. The hollow spindle 181 is clutched to the worm 180 by a toothed catch 188 under the action of a spring 190; and a lug 193<1> on the worm limits the rotation of the worm to a little less than 180‹. The serrations of the catch correspond to the divisions of a scale which is marked on the worm and moves opposite to a zero line marked on the slide. When the spindle 181 is pressed down against the spring, the catch may be disengaged and shifted to a new position, and the lug 193<1> is no longer operative and the worm can be rotated indefinitely until the vertical slide is detached. The spindle 181 and the stem 191 are attached to the slide by bayonet-like joints, which facilitate assembling and disassembling. The rack 183 is adjustably screwed to the receiver 2 at 186, enabling the vertical slide to be raised or lowered slightly without affecting the zero of the scale of the worm 180. The rack 183, after adjustment, is clamped by a screw 187. The vertical slide may move slightly obliquely to compensate for bullet drift. The windage side 173 is adjusted by a screw 176 with a milled head 177 detachably secured by a. spring catch 179.
