SIGHTING APPARATUS FOR GUNS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR GRAUHERING, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Essen-Riittenscheid, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sighting Apparatus for Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a sighting apparatus for guns and it has for an object to provide an apparatus which is of very compact and simple construction and which is primarily intended to be used when the ordinary sighting apparatus (attachment or.
the like) of the gun is put out of operation.
One embodiment of the sighting apparatus is shown in the accompanying drawings, by way of example.
Figure 1 is a side view of the sighting apparatus in connection with a gun-barrel, the central part of the gun-barrel being broken away; Fig. 2 is a rear view; Fig. 3 is a top view; Fig. 4 is a side view of the sighting apparatus on an enlarged scale and partly in section on line 4-4., Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a side view of the sighting apparatus on an enlarged scale and partly in section on line 5-5, Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6, Fig. 5, looking from the left and at right angles to the section plane.
The si hting apparatus is provided with a body A A A made from one piece of material and of approximate J -shape (see in particular Fig. 3). This body is provided with a dovetailed foot a which serves the purpose of securing the sighting apparatus on the breech B of the gun-barrel. To that end, the breech is provided with a reinforcement I) having a groove (Fig. 2) fitting the foot a The arms A A of the body of the sighting apparatus form the guide for a sight-device or sight-slide C which is laterally adjustable in the known manner. The front sight D which cooperates with the rear sight 0 of the sight slide is secured on the-gun-barrel.
The shank A of the body of the sighting apparatus is provided with an arcuate guide a for the level-carrier E, in which is journaled a worm F (Figs. 4 and 6) which meshes with teeth a provided on the shank A The level G (Figs. 3 and 5) rests in a housing G which is swingingly arranged on a horizontal bolt 2 in a lateral projection E of the level carrier. The housing G can be adjusted by means of a worm H (Figs. 5 and 6) ournaled in the projection E of the level carrier E.
On the level carrier E is provided a mark J and on the shank A is a corresponding elevation scale K (see in particular Fig. 5). A second mark L (Fig. 3) on the level carrier E and a scale M on the front face of the handwheel H of the worm H indicate the angular position of the level G relatively to the car rier E. The shank A in connection with the parts arranged thereon thus forms a socalled pointing arc.
When the above-described sighting device is used, the sight-slide C is first given the adjustment corresponding to the lateral deflection of the projectile for the distance of the target, and the gun-barrel is thereupon directed in such a manner that the sighting line points at the target. By means of the worm H, the level G is then brought into a position in which the mark L registers with the division line of thescale M which corresponds to the terrain angle of the target, the terrain angle being measured by means of the attachment of another gun of the battery or by means of the telescope of the bat tery. After the terrian an le in this manner has been eliminated, the level carrier E is adjusted by means of the worm F until the mark J registers with the line of the scale K which corresponds to the elevation to be imparted to the gun-barrel. Finally, the gunbarrel is given such a position by means of the elevating mechanism that the level is balanced. The gun-barrel has then therequired lateral direction and elevation.
Without departing from the scope of my invention, I might do away with the front sight D and use, instead of the sight-slide C, a laterally adjustable sighting device (telescope or the like) which in itself fixes the sighting line. In such case it would be necessary to curve the guide for the sighting device formed by the arms A A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
