GEORGE S. LEWIS', OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, .AS-SIGNOR TO J'. STEVENS ARMS COMPANY, OF CHICOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU SETTS.
REAR SIGHT FOR FIREARMS.
Application filed October 2, 1919.
T0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springeld, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rear Sights for Firearms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved rear sight adapted for easy adjustment for elevation. The sight has been developed in connection with a target pistol but is capable of application to other firearms. f
In the accompanying drawing in which the invention is illustrated- Figure l is a view in side elevation ot' a pistol to which the improved sight is applied.
Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are detail views of the improved sight.
The pistol shown in the drawing is designed particularly for use as a target pistol and comprises a frame a, with grip pieces c2 secured by bolts a3, and a barrel Z) secured in its sleeve or carrier b which is pivoted in the frame at b2. The improved rear sight g is shown as mounted on the frame near its rear end, the maximum distance between the front sight and the rear sight being thus secured. The rear sight comprises a notched member g carried by an arm g2 which is pivoted at its forward end g3 on a pin g4 mounted in a block g'. The notched member g bears at one end against a clamping screw 97 which is threaded. in the corresponding member of the block g and has formed in its other end a slot g8 which is engaged by an eccentric Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Serial No. 327,865.
pin (/9 carried in the face or end of a screw or rotatable body glo threaded or mounted in the other member of the block ga. For the purpose oi adjusting the sight the screw g7 is backed ori' slightly so as to relieve thc movable member g', g2 of pressure and the screw glo is then rotated so as to raise or lower the notched end of the sight as required. IVhen the required adjustment has been effected the screw gf is again set up to hold the sight in its adjusted position.
I claim as my invention:
l. In a firearm, the combination of a sight block, a slotted sight pivotally mounted in the block, and a rotatable device mounted in the block and having in its end an eccentric pin to engage the slot in the side of the movable sight.
2. In a firearm, the combination of a sight block, a sight pivotally mounted in the sight block, means to adjust the position of the sight, and a binding screw threaded in the sight block and arranged to bear against the side of the pivoted sight to retain it in position.
In a firearm, the combination of a sight block having two side members, a sight piv oted between the two side members and having a longitudinal slot in one side thereof, a clamping screw threaded in one side of the sight block and arranged to bear against the pivoted sight, and a screw threaded in the other member of the sight block and having an eccentric pin to engage the slot in the side ot' the pivoted sight.
This specification signed this 29th day of: September, A. D. 1919.
