Loom reeds; loose-reed motions.-In looms for weaving gauze or like fabrics, for the usual reed is substituted a comb A with the required number of steel teeth, which may be cast in the back of the comb. The comb is arranged to slide up and down in the usual casing E of a loose-reed loom. The back of the comb is formed with a horizontal ledge B, and the comb is secured to a bar C, which is carried by rods F secured in bosses G fixed to a shaft H. The shaft H is carried by arms J' fixed to a rock-shaft K, mounted in brackets fixed to the lay-swords. A lever M, pivoted at M', passes through a slot in a depending link L secured to the shaft H. When the comb A is leaving the fell after beating-up the weft, the lever M is depressed by the action of a two-throw tappet 0 mounted on the tappet shaft O<1>, so that the comb A is lowered. The comb is raised again, before the shuttle is picked, by the action of springs P' connected to the shaft H and to brackets Q on the lay, so that the shuttle may run against the comb. The downward movement of the shaft H is limited by leather bands R. If the shuttle is trapped in the shed, the comb A will be pushed back in a similar manner to the ordinary loose-reed.
