2961. Thompson, C. Feb. 12. Loom stop-motions; loose-reed motions; shuttlerelief motions.-The stop-rod 1, mounted upon the lay 3, carries a finger 4, having a tail-piece 5, against which presses the lower end of a lever 6, supported by the shuttle box 8. A finger 10, secured to the rod 1, carries a bowl 11, which rests on a spring 12. In front of the finger 4 is a movable catch 15, having a pin 16, which presses against a projection 17, on the ordinary stopping and starting handle 18. The upper end of the lever 6 rests against the shuttle-box swell 9. When the loom is running properly, the shuttle enters the box, and presses back the lever 6, by means of the swell 9. In consequence of this action, the tail-piece 5 forces the spring 5 downwards, and the finger 4 is lifted clear of the catch 15, but, when the shuttle is trapped, the swell is not pressed back, and the finger 4 is not raised, so that it strikes the catch, thereby causing the loom to stop, and then strikes the ordinary fixed stop 19. In a modification, the spring 12 is pivoted to a frame, and its rear end is hooked, the free end of the hook being arranged to press the bowl downwards, and cause the lever 6 to be released from the swell. The loose-reed case of a loose-reed motion is formed with a curved face, against which the reed normally rests.
