Abstract

2178. Drummond, C. S. Jan. 28. Steam turbines.-An outward-flow steam turbine is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. A shaft 44 carries a drum 4 formed with rows of nozzle apertures 3 and also a second drum 7 having a peripheral ring of blades 13. A cylindrical partition 6 is arranged between the drums, and has L-shaped expanding passages 5 controlled by valves 17. A steam pipe 1 opens into a central steam chest 2 and the steam passing outwardly through the passages rotates the drums. The valves are connected to a ring 20 so that they can be operated simultaneously and used for governing the turbine. The drums may rotate in opposite directions.
