13,458. Imray, O., [Sturgeon, J. C.]. June 14. Impact wheels. - A reversible multiple-expansion turbine of the impact-wheel type is shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The casing C is shaped like a stepped cone and contains a series of annular partitions E forming chambers F. A steam chest N contains a governor - controlled ring valve N' which regulates the steam supply to the first chamber F, from which it passes through ports in a ring valve E<1> and inclined nozzles in the partition, so that it impinges on the first row of blades J of the drum I', then passes through the second chamber F, and so on. Each chamber contains a ring valve E', and these are connected by toothed gearing G<1> to a common operating-handle so that they can be rotated to reverse the turbine by bringing either of the two oppositely-inclined sets of nozzles in the partitions into use. The drum has dummy pistons L' at the exhaust end, and the piston chambers M are connected by pipes to the chambers F. In a modification, the turbine is made on the stepped - cylinder principle.
