Abstract

6380. Smith, H., and Lewis, E. W. March 16. Gas turbines.-A turbine having a number of rotary open-ended explosion chambers is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The turbine wheel has a number of curved explosion chambers A open at their outer ends and closed at their inner ends by a conical hub C having admission valves A<2> controlling the air supply from a fan J, and also controlling the supply of explosive fluid admitted through passages C<5> in the shaft and hub. The wheel is surrounded by an incomplete ring of guide-vanes F, an imperforate partition F<1> allowing the explosive mixture to be compressed before being exploded. The valves are actuated by levers G pivoted at one end, and having rollers G<2> at the other end arranged progressively so that one or more can be acted on by a cam H adjusted by toothed gearing H<2>. The mixture is exploded by sparking-plugs K, and the explosion is timed to take place as each chamber approaches the guide-vanes. Part of the exhaust escapes into a passage L<2> through a nozzle L, and the ejector action thus produced draws the remainder of the exhaust through a pipe L<5> opening into the opposite side of the turbine casing.
