Abstract

4556. Ferranti, S. Z. de. Feb. 24. Steam &c. turbines. - Relates to details in the construction and arrangement of elastic - fluid turbines specially applicable to turbines of the kind described in Specification No. 24,781, A.D. 1902. A nozzle a, Fig. 1, has a conical core b which makes the nozzle an expanding one. The core may be made movable so as to act as a valve. A puff governing-device of the kind described in the above-named Specification is duplicated in order to increase the evenness of the governing effect. A combined shaft-cooling and stuffing-box device has a easting 2, Fig. 9, which is placed on the shaft and has packings 4 enclosing an annular chamber through which water is circulated. To prevent the flow of heat from the body of the turbine to the frame, the turbine casing has brackets 7, Fig. 10, which rest on standards 8 with a throat cooled by a water-circulating device 9. A number of impact-wheels or other forms of turbine are arranged so that pinions on their driving-shafts engage with a common spur-wheel. A parallelflow turbine is arranged with a central partition similar to a dummy piston so that the casing is divided into two parts and steam flows from the first through a re-heater to the second. Two or more turbines on separate shafts may be connected partly in series and partly in parallel and are provided with re-heaters similarly arranged.
