Abstract
319,903. Stormonth, C. Sept. 3, 1928. Combined - f l o w type; working-fluid supply.-The rotor 20 of a gas turbine has peripheral combustion chambers 23, Fig. 2, the outlet reaction nozzles 27 of which are rearwardly directed, and are fitted with heat resisting steel plates 29. The exhaust passes by a group of fixed blades 46 to an impulse blade system 51, 52 carried by a second rotor 44 on the same shaft 22. It then passes to exhaust pipes 57 through an arrangement of baffles. The air and fuel mixture is supplied to an explosion chamber 25 by a mixing injector 26, the periodic supply being controlled by a ported rotary valve plate 31 which co-operates with hemispehrical valve seats 33. Scavenging air is also supplied periodically. Ignition is effected by plugs 73 connected to a cam-operated make-and-break switch. Fan blades 21, 50 on the rotors circulate air for cooling purposes, and packing rings 42, 43 are provided. Reversing.-By providing on the periphery of the rotor 20 two sets of chambers 23 with the reaction nozzles oppositely directed the turbine is made reversible. Blades.-The ring segment 45, Fig. 5, carrying the fixed blades 46 is clamped between adjoining casing parts. Tubes 49 are passed through the blades to convey cooling air circulated by the fan 50. The blades 53 are fixed by a ring 54. Bearings are arranged at 36, 38, 39 and an oil sump at 74.
