Abstract

9716. Harrison, R. April 21. Reversing.-Jet-wheels are provided with inlet nozzles g<1>, g<2>, Fig. 1, and exhaust ports e<1>, e<2>, acting in series. By a valve in a chest p, the functions of the inlet and exhaust ports are exchanged, and the steam flows in a reverse direction. Attached to the valve is an extension o<8>, so that, when the valve is raised as shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust orifice is restricted. thereby converting it into an inlet nozzle. In a modification, Fig. 4, the steam is fractionally exhausted during reverse running. During forward running, steam enters the valve-chest by a pipe and passes along a pipe g<7> to the high-pressure nozzle. After exhausting into a chamber h<2>, it is redirected upon the rotor by a nozzle g<2> and finally exhausts through the port e<2> and pipe h<3>. For reverse running, the valve occupies the position shown in Fig. 5, and the valve k<1>, Fig. 4, is opened. Steam entering at g passes through the port e<2>, now restricted by the extension o<8>, and is exhausted through the port g<2> to the chamber h<2>. Part of the steam is returned through the valve k<1> and pipe h<7>, while the remainder is redirected upon the rotor and is returned through the pipe g<7>, the whole of the steam being finally exhausted through the pipe h<3>. A modification is described in which the valve is provided with three pistons and the valve k<1> is dispensed with. A modified construction is described for converting exhaust ports into inlet ports.
