Abstract

24,309. Masters, T. J. Nov. 9. Steam &c. turbines.-A parallel-flow turbine has several wheel discs 3, Fig. 1, mounted on a shaft 1, each disc having an outer and inner ring of blades 9, 10, for forward and reversed running respectively. The discs are separated by partitions 6 provided with two rings of nozzle openings 15, Figs. 1 and 13, of graduated size. The admission cover 14 has two annular steam channels 17 fed by a branched steam pipe 21. The inner ring of nozzles is controlled by screw-down valves 44 and the outer series of nozzles is covered by a ring valve 33 formed with slots or perforations of two sizes and operated by an external handle 40 so that one in four or one in two of the nozzles can be cut out. The partitions 6, Figs. 9 and 10, are formed in halves, and have nozzles 15 diminishing in size towards their discharge ends The partitions have annular grooves containing packing- rings 68 pressed apart against the adjoining wheel discs by springs 69. The turbine may have both rings of blades arranged to operate in the same direction, and be made reversible by having a duplicate but reversed engine arranged on the engine shaft.
