14,305. Boult, A. J., [Seydel, A.]. June 27. Cupola furnaces; blast for cupolafurnaces.-The shaft of the furnace is of larger diameter in its central part than in the upper and bottom sections, and gas outlets 7 are made through the lining, near the top, so that the upward velocity of the gases is reduced. The blast is heated by passing it around tubes 11, or through a chamber, in the top of the cupola and then through the space between the outer and inner casings 14, 15. Passages 12, 13, through, and at the back of, the lining increase the heating of the inner casing 14. Additional tuyÞres 22, 23 are provided for supplying air to aid in completing the combustion in the shaft and top of the cupola. Fuel, such as sprayed or vaporized liquid or gas with air and steam, may be injected through the tuyÞres 24.
