Abstract

21,421. Mathesius, W. Sept. 28. Hot-blast stoves.-In a stove of the kind in which an iron shell encloses a number of annular concentric flues surrounding a central combastion chamber and in which the flues are surmounted by cupolas, a special arrangement of the cupolas and flue walls is provided; the gas and air are admitted to the combustion chamber in such a manner as to produce a long flame. As shown in Fig. 1, the combustion chamber 1 is surrounded by concentric flues 7, 8, 9, the flue 9 being filled with chequer brickwork. The flue wall 5 is extended upwards through a lower cupola 14 into an upper cupola 17, the joint between the flue wall 5 and the cupola 14 being packed by means of a ring 16. The space 18 between the flue wall 5 and the cupola 17 may also be packed. The cupolas are supported on a framework 15 carried by the outer shell 11. Furnace gases and air for combustion are supplied to the combustion chamber 1 through conduits 3, 4 respectively, which conduits are arranged tangentially to the combustion chamber and approximately parallel to one another, so that the flames and gases pass spirally upwards to the space 22, from which they pass through the flues 7, 8, 9 to the outlet flue 13. Cold blast is admitted through the pipe 21.
