Abstract

Motor cycles; driving-mechanism; clutches.-The pulley or chain-wheel g for transmitting power from the motor is mounted loosely upon the motor shaft c, which extends through the crank casing b. The pulley g has a flange g<1> which carries a rim g<2> adapted to engage the rim of a friction-wheel h. This wheel runs on ball bearings on the shaft c, and forms, together with a cover i, a casing for toothed gearing. This gearing consists of a wheel 1 fixed to the shaft c and meshing with a pinion 2. Formed integral with the pinion 2 is a pinion 3 which gears with a wheel 4 fixed to the hub of the pulley g. The pinions 2, 3 are mounted on a spindle screwed to the wheel h, a balance weight l being provided. Normally, the pulley g is pressed into engagement with the wheel h by means of a spring f enclosed in a box e mounted on ball bearings. A lever m pivoted to the vehicle frame or motor is provided for the purpose of releasing the pulley from engagement with the wheel. Preferably, this lever has a ring portion encircling the wheel h and provided with rollers o to press against the flange g'. When the pulley and wheel h are in engagement, the pulley revolves at the same speed as the shaft c. When the pulley g is pressed out of engagement with the wheel h, the motor runs free. Upon further movement of the lever m, the ring of the lever engages the wheel h and acts as a brake, the pulley g being then driven through the toothed gearing. Ball bearings are arranged between the flywheel a and the casing b to take the end thrust.
