Abstract

6789. Allison, C. A., [Upton Machine Co.]. April 1. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed gearing to be interposed between a motor shaft and a part to be driven. The motor shaft is connected with the shaft 1 by means of the flanges 5<a> &c., and the shaft to be driven is connected with the flanges 24 on the sleeve 2. The gearing is adapted to drive the sleeve 2 in the same direction and at the same speed as the shaft 1, in the same direction as but at a slower speed than the shaft 1, or in the opposite direction to the shaft 1 according to circumstances. The shaft 1 carries two pinions 22, 16, a fixed disc 4 and a loose box piece 7, to which the disc 4 forms a sort of lid, and which is provided with a brake strap 7<a>. The loose box 7 carries planet wheels 14, which gear with the pinion 16 and with a rack 17 forming part of a disc 18 secured by screws 20 to the driven sleeve 2. The disc 18 and the flange 3 of the driven sleeve 2 carry a second set of planet wheels 21 which engage with the pinion 22 and a second internal rack 23, the outer face of which is provided with a brake strap 23<a>. The loose box 7 carries within it a split ring arrangement operated by a lever 11 and cam 12 whereby the box and shaft 1 may be caused to rotate together. When the sleeve 2 is required to rotate uniformly with the shaft 1, the box 7 and disc 4 are clamped together. To rotate the sleeve 2 in the same direction as the shaft 1 but at a slower speed, the rack 23 is held stationary by its brake band, while the box 7 is free to rotate, the motion being transmitted through the pinion 22 and the planet wheels 21, the inactive parts of the mechanism running loose. To reverse the direction of motion of the part 2, the rack 23 is allowed to run loose, while the box 7 is held by its brake strap, the motion being in this case transmitted through the pinion 16, pinions 14, and rack 17 to the disc 18 and sleeve 2.
