Abstract

14,450. Powell, A. D. July 13. Motor road vehicles. - Relates to a two-speed epicyclic gear adapted to be fitted to existing crank-shafts of motor-cycles &c. The sun pinion C is secured upon the tapered end A<1> of the crank-shaft A by a hollow nut F. The pinion C has a sleeve portion B on its inner end supporting a bearing B' on which rides the planet carrier D and driven pulley &c. E, and a sleeve portion B' on its outer end on which rides an internally-toothed ring G. The ring G is adapted to be held stationary by a brake J to produce the low speed or to be gripped on its flat face G' by a plate clutch H that rotates with the shaft A to produce the fast speed. The clutch H has a gripping-face H<1> and is traversed longitudinally upon a squared part F<1> of the nut F by the relative rotation of face cams L, M, supported by a nut N and lock-nut O. In a modification described in the Provisional Specification, the sun pinion is keyed directly to the crank-shaft, and the clutch, which slides on an extension of that shaft, is operated by bell-crank levers and a sliding wedge.
