Abstract

17,574. Hackblock, A., and Scotton, W. H. Aug. 12. Motor road vehicles.- In speed-changing gear for motor road vehicles, the hollow driving-shaft a, Fig. 1, has toothed wheels g loosely mounted upon it which engage with toothed wheels h fixed to the shaft d. Each wheel g, kept in position by sleeves, collars, or distancepieces e, is formed or combined with a bored flange g<1> and has internal teeth, preferably rounded, formed within the bore of its hub. The wheels g are keyed to the shaft as desired by means of a bar f which slides in the hollow shaft a. The barf, Figs. 1 and 9, is formed with an angular projecting piece f<2> and a recess f<3> at or near its middle, and a somewhat similar projection and recess f<4>, f<5> and a collar f<1> at its ends. The wheels g have driving- keys c which slide up and down in slots cut under the wheels in the shaft a. Each key has an oblong slot with bevelled edges c', at the top and bottom, Fig. 11, by means of which the key is lifted by the projection f<2> when the bar f is moved, so that the teeth of the key engage the internal teeth of the wheel g. The wheel g is thus locked to the driving- shaft, the movement of the bar f at the same time withdrawing any other driver from engagement with its wheel. The end projection may be used for forcing the end driver into engagement with its wheel, providing that the projections are so spaced that only one wheel g is locked to the driving-shaft a at a time. A crosshead i, Figs. 1 and 5, is mounted on a ballrace bearing i<2> at the end of the sliding bar f, which revolves while the crosshead remains stationary. Pintles at the side of the crosshead fit into the double arm of a lever j connected by the crosshead i<3> to the bar m, which slides in the guides of the gear box n, and lever k. The sliding bar may be actuated directly by hand, or by a screw or gearing, and arrested in position for various speeds by springs l combined with the crosshead i<3> and shifting-bar m, a quadrant k<1> indicating the position of the lever j for particular speeds. The shaft d, to which are keyed or otherwise attached the wheels h spaced by hubs h', may constitute the driving shaft.
