Abstract

Feb. 3, 1922, Valves.-Inlet and exhaust ports a, a<1> in the cylinder are controlled by a rotary sleeve valve B formed with ports b and cooperating with ports c in the piston leading into channels c<2>, c<3> opening through the end of the piston into the combustion chamber. The ports c are shaped in the manner indicated in Fig. 3, so as to secure the maximum effective port area for minimum area of aperture, allowing for the combined movements of the piston and valve. The upper end of the valve may have longitudinal slits to allow expansion. The application to a double-acting engine is described. Specification 163,130 is referred to.
