Abstract

Machinery, utilizing inertia to obtain movements in. - In apparatus for utilizing the rolling, rocking, vibrating, or jolting movements of ships, rail and road vehicles, &c. for the production of power or motion or for indicating such movements in a normally stationary body, a heavy plate 1, Figs. 1 and 2, moves substantially horizontally on loose balls 5 in a frame 2, stops 6 preventing jumping, and means being provided for limiting rotation if the plate is circular. Buffers 3 prevent shock. Pawls 8 are pivoted on the plate 1 and pressed by springs x into engagement with a ratchet-wheel 9 secured on a vertical spindle 10 carried in standards 5, so that the spindle rotates always in one direction as the plate 1 moves. Cords 13 may be attached to a pin 14 on a disc 12 on the upper end of the spindle 10 to convey motion to apparatus to be actuated. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a rocking lever 15 is supported by a ball socket 16 and carries a ball end 17, engagring the ptate 1, and a plate 19 to which are attached cords 20, preferably four in number, passing over pulleys 23 on extensions of the standards 7 to the part or parts to be operated. In a modification, the cords may be attached directly to the plate 1, or this arrangement may be combined with either of those shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The motion of the lever 15 may be converted into rotary motion.
