JOSEPH ERNEST COLAS, OF PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRI BRUNET, OI" PARIS, FRANCE.
APPARATUS FOR INDICATING THE PASSAGE OF A TRAIN AT DEFINITE POINTS OF A TRACK.
No. oeaoes.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn ERNEST COLAS, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented Improve ments in Apparatus for Indicating the Fassage of a Train at Definite Points of a Track, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object an apparatus arranged either upon the locomotive or upon the track, and producing a notice for the engineer or the signal station by the contact of a movable abutment on the track with an operating device or striker fixed or pivoted to the machine, the device being capable of being put into activity by the employment of a permanent magnet and the balancing of the double commanding lever being effected by returning springs.
The apparatus is characterized by the mechanism which permits it to operate equally well in the two directions of the progress of the train.
In the accompanying drawings :Figures 1 and 2 show the apparatus in section following line BB of Fig. 2 and a plan view respectively. Figs. 3 and 1 show the apparatus mounted on the frame of the locomotive by an appropriate support 3.
The apparatus bears a box 6 in the bearings (Z of which a shaft 0 can turn. The unloaded arm a of a double balanced lever is fastened on the shaft outside of the box and bears a brush 1 intended to be raised by the strikers .9 arranged upon the track. In this box is placed an electromagnetic device. An armature 0 borne by an arm n, capable of turning around the axle p is moved away from the poles 9 under action of a block g forming a cam, fastened on the shaft 0. This latter bears two pins 5 and 6 projecting respectively above and below and each movable in a groove 7 and 8 formed on the half circumference of an annular socket 9 and 10 set loosely on the shaft 0. Each socket bears a hook 11, 12, resting against a projection 13 and 14, and to each of which is hooked one end of opposing springs 15, 16 the other ends of which are fixed to a hook 17, 18 secured to the box 6.
When a train running in the direction of the arrow 19, meets a striker s, the arm a of the double balanced lever turns in the direction of the arrow 20, Fig. 3. The pin Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 7, 1908.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Serial No. 414,720.
5, put in motion by the shaft 0 itself moves the socket 9 with its hook 12 and stretches the spring 16. The socket 10 does not move, the pin 6 moving free in the groove 7 When the striker is passed, after operating the apparatus, the balancing spring 16 brings back the hook 12 against its stop, that is, the arm a of the double lever resumes its normal vertical position. WVhen a train going in a direction opposite to the arrow 19 passes with its lever a to the right of a striker carried on the track, it is the socket 10 which is put in motion while the socket 9 remains stationary.
This controlling device can, of course, be combined for the closing of an electric circuit, by means of a finger mounted on the shaft 0 which normally could maintain a tongue away from a contact piece of a second circuit. The device described being able to operate any other indicating mechanism such as a brake-valve, whistle, etc.
It is to be understood that the two stops l3 and 14 could be joined into a single one, and the size of the grooves 7 and 8 would then be increased and in consequence the length of the play of the lever which could be almost 360.
Due to the pins 5 and 6 movable in the grooves of the corresponding collars 7 and 8, action of shaft 0 is produced in one direc tion or another according to the direction of the train and it is on this shaft itself that the operating organ 9 of the indicator is mounted.
lVhat particularly characterizes this device, then, are the collars 9 and 10, forming attaching points 11 and 12 of the returning springs and forming at the same time stops to limit the movements of the operating lever.
This device permits a very large field of movement to the operating lever a, and of lessening the shock which this lever receives without the interposition of any organ between it and the returning springs 15 and 16, the active force which this lever could receive being immediately absorbed by the action of the return spring in an opposite direction.
I claim as my invention An apparatus of the class described comprising a casing carried by the locomotive, an axle in said casing, an arm on the axle,
a projection on the track adapted to engage with the arm to rock the axle, an operating member 9 on said axle, a pair of sleeves having grooves therein loosely mounted on the axle, a pair of pins on the axle engaging in said grooves, a spring secured to each sleeve for returning said sleeves to normal position, said springs being secured to the sleeves at opposite points so as to move the sleeves in opposite directions, and indicating 10 means actuated by the operating member.
Signed at Paris, France, this 27th day of January 1908.
JOSEPH ERNEST COLAS.
