Abstract

187,891. Wheeler, H. D. Dec. 19, 1921. Spray carburettors.-The casing A contains an axially adjustable tube B with conical end b adapted to vary the air passage formed between the conical end and a double-conical part a<3> fixed in the casing and containing fuel orifices a<6>, the air entering through ports a<4>. These orifices are supplied from an annular channel a<5> which receives fuel from an inlet C through a rotatable plug c<2>, orifice c and passages a<7>, a<8>. The passage a' is open to the atmosphere, at its lower end and the passage a<8> is not in axial alignment therewith as shown in Fig. 4, in order to vary the suction effect on the orifice c which serves as a pilot jet when the tube B is in the closed position. The orifice c is controlled bv a needle valve D coaxial with the plug and actuated independently of or conjointly with the, tube B. The; plug has a port c<5>, Fig. 7, for the passage of fuel which, together with air through passage a' may be controlled by rotating the plug by a flexible connection on pulley c<4> without altering the size of the orifice c. The plug is held to its seat and loaded against rotation by a helical spring c<6>. Instead of the air inlet ports a<4> grooves may be formed along the length of the inner tube B and open to the atmosphere or holes may be formed in the conical end. In place of the small orifices a<6>, a narrow slit may be employed.
