Abstract
186,999. Rivers, J. H., and Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Ltd., Sir W. G. July 8, 1921. Clutches, friction.-Wedges 13, 13 are connected by a link 14 and are arranged loosely between an outer driven drum 23 and segments 1, 1, which turn on pivots 2 on a flanged sleeve secured to the driving-shaft and are moved outwards to press the wedges into engagement with the drum by an axially sliding wedge 10 engaging rollers 6, 6 on blocks 9, 9 secured to the segment ends. The wedges 13, 13a tend to move to disengagement position under the influence of a lever 16 connected by a spring 15 to one segment and pivoted on a pin 18 in the other, so that its free end engages an adjustable screw 17 on the wedge 13, motion being limited by a screw 21 in the wedge 13 engaging a slot 22 in the flanged driving-sleeve. The lever 16 is engaged by a projection moving with the wedge 10 to remove the spring pressure from the wedges when the clutch is in operation. The friction between the drum and wedges is arranged to be greater than that between the wedges and segments, for example by the use of surfaces grooved and smoothed respectively, or by providing roller bearings between the wedges and segments; retardation of the drum 23 then increases theclutching grip.
