Abstract
184,822. Giorgini, G. Feb. 24, 1921. Welding wheels.-The beaded edges of wheel rims for pneumatic tyres are electrically welded by roller electrodes inclined to each other. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the electrodes 16, 16<1> are carried by hollow rollers 13, 13' mounted on shafts 10 which are driven from the main shaft by worm and spur gearing. The profile of the electrodes is maintained constant by abutment rollers 17, 17<1> and the electrodes are kept cool by water which circulates through the hollow rollers by way of the nozzle 25, tube 31, ports 30, ports 28, pipe 27 to the exit 21. The housing of the lower roller is mounted on a pivot A and is angularly adjusted by a pivoted screw spindle 22<1> and link 26 to regulate the apparatus to the size of the flange. Deformation of the profile of the flange of the rim 1 is prevented by a roller 18. The rim is pressed into contact with the lower electrode 16' by a pair of guide-rollers 2 carried by levers 2<1> which are pivoted on bolts 4 in elongated slots in a framing secured to the casing of the electrode 16<1> so as to adjust their position according to the diameter of the rim. They are moved into or out of operative position by handles 5. An elastic stop lever 12 provided with handles 8 has slots 8' to engage pins 12' on the levers 2'. Rests 11 are provided to maintain the rim parallel to the lower electrode. In a modification, the rollers 17, 17<1> and 18 are omitted, the deformation being prevented by insulated rings carried on the electrodes adjacent the periphery thereof. The casing of the lower electrode is extended in the form of telescopic tubes containing spring-pressed rods having rollers engaging the internal surface of the rim. In either form, in order to apply pressure to the rim the upper electrode casing is carried by a lever which is connected by a rod to a second lever which is moved by a screw provided with a hand wheel and engaging an internally screwed sleeve secured to the framing.
