386,272. Making tubes. SPALDING, G. S. and MIDGLEY, A., 681, Eccleshall Road, Sheffield. Aug. 19, 1932, No. 23234. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Coiling; welding.-In making metal tubes of the kind in which two overlapping strips are coiled helically and electrically welded together, the shafts of the rolls E, E<1> which feed the strips through the coiling chamber are connected to and drive the shafts B, B<1> of the roller electrodes A, A<1> through universal joints C, C<1> in order that independent pressures may be applied to the rolls and electrodes. The rolls E, E<1> may be secured to or formed integral with hollow shafts S, S<1> geared together and connected by cotter pins I, I<1> to shafts D, D<1>. The electrode shafts are mounted in brackets G, G<1>. The axes of the rolls and of the electrodes are parallel to each other and at rightangles to the length of the strips. The tube M is supported by a parallel pair of guide rolls N, rotated at the same peripheral speed as the tube, the ends being screw threaded so as to assist the tube out of the coiling chamber.
