FOR MAKING SPIRALS William F. H. Braun, Wynnewood, Pa. Application July 21, 1944, Serial No. 545,995 3 Claims. (Cl. 153-54) The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple, reliable and efllcient machine for making spirals, for example cutters, for lawn mowers and for other purposes.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description at the end of which the invention will be claimed.
In the following description, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which: Fig.1 is a side view partly in section of a machine embodying features of the invention;
. Fig. '2 is a top or plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view drawn to a reduced scale and looking from the top of the sheet toward the bottom in Fig.2;
Fig. 4 is a face view of a strip of metal or blade to be bentinto spiral form;
Fig. 5 is a view of the same bent into curved form;
Fig. 6 is a view of the strip shown in Fig. 5 twisted into spiral form;
2 as detachably connected with the housing I so that diiferent dies may be employed. The cavity through the die is of twisted form as illustrated in Figs. 10 to '13.
At the entrance of the die are two pairs of in and l l are mounted in a sleeve detachably arranged in the die holder. The bite between the rolls In is aligned with the entrance to the 'avity in. the die.
The mode of operation of the machine may be described as follows.
A straight strip of metal a as shown in Figs. 4 and 7 is fed to the machine Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of the strip Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 1 and showing the feed rolls;
Fig. 9 is an end view showing. the twisting rolls;
Fig. 10 is a detached elevational view of the die;
Fig. 11 is a view of the die shown in Fig. 10;
Fig. 12 is a view of the right-hand end of the die shown in Fig. 10; and
Fig. 13 is a, view of one-half of the die shown in Fig. 10.
left-hand end of the Referring to the drawings, the invention will be described in connection with the manufac-' ture of spiral blades for lawn mowers but the machine of the invention is applicable to other uses and purposes. I indicates a frame or housing. Mounted on one face of the frame or housing are sizing and feed rolls 2. These rolls are of substantially the same diameter and are grooved and iournaled to the ex'act dimensions of the finished blade or strip and they are positively driven by means of the gear wheels 3. 4, 5 and Ii are bending rolls of which roll 4 is driven by gear wheel I. The roll 4 is of larger diameter than the rolls 5 and 6 which are of the same diam The rolls 5 and 6 are spaced apart and are shown as peripherally grooved. The roll 6 is also shown as peripherally grooved. 8 is a drive shaft for driving the various gears which are arranged on the other face of the housing. 9 is a die shown and, in passing betweenthe grooved sizing and feed rolls 2, any slight irregularity in dimension is corrected and the strip is fed forward. In passing between the bending rolls 4, 5 and 6, the strip is bent into curved form as shown in Fig. 5. In passing through the twisting rolls' I0 and II, the strip assumes spiral form as shown in Fig. 6; and, in passing through the die, any irregularityinthe spiral form of the strip is corrected.
It will, of course, be understood that the strip may be fed to the machine in sections and each following section pushes the section ahead of it through the machine.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and procedure witha out departing from the spirit of. the invention which is not limited as to such matters or otherwise than the appended claims may require.
-I claim: I
1. In a machine of the type recited, the combination of, a pair of peripherally grooved sizing and feeding rolls, a set of three bending rolls, two pairs of twisting rolls of which the axes are inclined in respect to the axes of the other rolls, a spiral die arranged in progression, and means for driving the sizing and feeding rolls.
2. In a machine of the type recited, the combination of, a pair of feed rolls, a set of three bending rolls of which two are of substantially the same diameter and the third is of greater diameter, two pairs of twisting rolls of which the axes are inclined in respect to the axes of the other dies, a spiral die, and means for driving ing roll of largest diameter.
a" 3. In a. machine of the type recited, the combinatlon of, ahousing, a pair of peripherally grooved feed rolls, a set of three bending rolls of which one is of larger diameter than the other, two pairs of twisting rolls of which the axes are inclined in respect to the axes of the other rolls, all of said rolls arranged at one face of the housing, a spiral die detachably connected with one end of the housing and aligned with said rolls, and means arranged on the other face of the housing for driving each pair of feed rolls and for driving the bending roll of largest diameter.
