T 0 all whom it may (1011 067% Be it known that I, Emronn F. SHUs'rnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of. Connecticut, have invented new and Improved ire Straightening and Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices employed for straightening wire, usually taken from a coil, and for cutting it into predetermined lcngths,. and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a machine of this class that shall be extremely simple in construction and particularly efficient in its method of operation.
One form of machine embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved wire straightening and cutting machine.

In the accompanying drawings the numeral 3 indicates the base of my improved machine having a frame 4 rising therefrom and 5 indicates a bar extending from the front end of the machine with uprights 6 extending from said bar and supporting rests 7 at their upper ends to receive the lengths of wire as they are straightened by an arbor 8 rotatably mounted on the top of the frame 4. All of the parts thus far described are of usual and well known construction and a further and detailed description thereof is, therefore, omitted herein.
In the construction of machines of this class a pair of feed rolls 9 located one above the other is positioned near the end of the arbor 8 for the purpose of drawing the wire lengthwise through said arbor, and a connecting device embodying a flywheel 10 is mounted to rotate loosely on a flywheel shaft 11 with its axis located below but extending in the same general direction as the axes of the feed rolls 9. A cutting device common to machines of this class is connected with the shaft 11, and a one-cycle clutch is mounted to connect the flywheel 10 with the shaft 11, but to effect at each operation a single rotation only of said shaft, the clutch being automatically operated to disengage the flywheel from the shaft at each rotation of the latter in a manner common to machines of this class and as will be readily understood, and for which reason a detailed descrlption is omitted herein, it being sufficient to state that a clutch operating lever 12 is employed for effecting the operations of the clutch, said lever being connected as by a clutch operating wire 13 with a clutch actuating mechanism 14: located at the front end of the wire supporting frame and constructed in a manner that will be readily understood by those acquainted with machines of this kind to operate the wire 13 when the free end of a wire being straightened comes in contact with a member of said wire actuating mechanism, and efi'ects a pull upon the wire 13 thereby actuating the lever 12 to operate the clutch to connect the flywheel 10 with the shaft 11 and set the cuttlng mechanism in operation.
In carrying out my invention I extend a. belt from a countershaft to a pulley 15 mounted on the arbor 8 and likewise I extend another belt from the same countershaft to a pulley 16, said belts being uncrossed and the axes of the pulleys 15 and 16 being parallel. The pulley 16 is secured to a machine shaft 17 mounted in hearings in arms extending from the side of the frame 4, said shaft supporting a bevel gear meshing with a bevel gear 18 secured to a connecting shaft 19. The shaft 19 bears a spur gear 20 located at one end of a train of gears, which train includes a spur gear 21 at the opposite end of said train secured to the shaft 22 of the upper feed roll 9. This shaft 22 of the upper feed roll has a pinion 23 meshing with a pinion on the shaft of the lower feed roll (not shown) to drive said feed rolls in a. manner that will be readily understood without further description, said feed rolls operating to draw the wire while it is being straightened through the arbor 8.
A sprocket wheel 24 secured to the shaft 22 is connected by a sprocket chain with a sprocket wheel 25 secured to a shaft 26 of a feed device comprising feed and straightening rolls 27, herein shown as three in number, located one above the other two and lower rolls and with its axis substantially in line with a vertical lane passi between said lower rolls, t e shafts 6 said rolls being connected by a train of intermeshing pinions 28, one of which pinions is secured to the shaft 26.
From the above description it will be seen that a very compact machine is revided, the arbor being driven from one elt passing from a countershaft, and the balance of the machine, including the feed rolls, the cutting ofl' devices, and the straightening and feed rolls, being all geared together and driven from a belt from the same countershaft throu h the machine shaft 17 parallel with the ar or and mounted on the frame of the machine.
I claim- 1. A wire straightening and cuttin machine comprising a straightening ar or, a machine shaft mounted on the frame of the machine and with its axis parallel with the axis of-said arbor, a flywheel shaft with its axis located at ri ht angles to the axis of said machine sha t, cuttm ofif mechanism connected with said flywhee shaft, feed rolls with their axes located parallel with said flywheel shaft, a connecting shaft a toothed geared connection between said machine shaft and said flywheel, and another toothed geared connection between said connecting shaft and said feed rolls.
2. A wire straightening and cutting machine including a straightening arbor, a machine shaft mounted on the frame of the machine and with its axis parallel with the with their axes located neeaooa and a toothed geared connection hetween the opposite end of said connecting shaft and said feed rolls.

A wire straightening and cuttin machine comprising a straighteni or or, machine shaft mounted on the frame of the machine and with its axis parallel with the axis of said arbor, a flywheel shaft with its axis located at right angles to the axis of said machine shaft, cuttin ofl mechanism connected with said flywhee shaft, feed rolls with their axes located parallel with said'- flywheel shaft, a connecting shaft having a driving connection intermediate its ends with said machine shaft, a toothed geared connection between one end of said connectin shaft and said flywheel on one side of sai drivin connection, and a toothed geared connection between the o posite end of said connecting shaft and sai feed rolls and on the opposite side of said driving connection t. A wire straightening and cutting machine comprising a straightening arbor, a machine shaft mounted on the frame of the machine, a flywheel shaft with its axis located at right agles to the axis of said machine shaft, a set of feed wheels at each end of said arbor and with their axes all parallel and parallel with said flywheel shaft, a geared connection between said machine shaft and said flywheel shaft and said feed wheels, a wire supporting frame extending from the front end of said machine frame clutch actuating mechanism supported porting frame, and a clutch mechanism for connecting said fl wheel and flywheel shaft, said clutch mec anism being operatively connected with said clutch actuating mechanism.
