[Class 83 (iv).] Skew-rolling ; mandrels.- A number of hyperboloidal skew rolls W are directly backed by the enclosing shaped ring St the rolls acting to reduce a solid bar or to reduce or expand or contract the diameter of a tube H on a mandrel. In Fig. 1 the mandrel and tube thereon is driven from a motor M, whereby the connecting rolls W rotate and rotate the backing ring St, the ring St having a toothed ring K3 which drives a gear Z3 on a shaft w, other gears Z1 Z2 on the end of the shaft w gearing with toothed rings K1, K2 on casing rings L1, L2 which in this drive are held by screws S2 to the frame G so that the shafts w can rotate epicyclically round the framing. The casing rings L1, L2 abut axially and are coupled by screws S. The rolls may be journalled by thrust bearings in these casing rings L1, L2 and the axial thrust is taken by bearings l4, l3. The rolls are long and thin and at least 10 are used and they may be driven by gear teeth cut in them and gearing with teeth on the support ring St or in the casing rings L1, L2. The rolls may have bearings to prevent axial displacement only. The shaft w may be directly motor driven and the supporting body St may be fixed in the framework. The rolls then have bevel gears at their ends driven by a fixed bevel ring on the framework. The supporting body St may have holes for dropping the scale through, or air or steam may be used to blow or suck scale through inclined holes therein. The blower may be positively driven from the mill driving means. Large tubes may be contracted to tubes of lesser diameter by the mill shown in Fig. 10 with modified mandrel. The gear teeth formed on the roll may also act on the work as cogging rolls.
