Abstract

393,636. Rolling tubes. FOREN, P. A., 3839, West Burnham Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. Sept. 7, 1931, No. 25102. [Class 83 (iv).] A pierced billet 10 is rolled out on a mandrel 11 between a series of rolls which thin the billet in rolls 12 at top and bottom along a circular or parallel sided area x, Fig. 2, and then thin the other sides in rolls 13, Fig. 3. Rolls 17, Figs. 1 and 4, reshape the tube to an approximately oval section at 45‹ followed by pairs of rolls 14, 15, &c. at alternate rightangles thereto. The last rolls 19 restore the tube 10 to circular shape as in Fig. 7. In Fig. 8 the housings comprise a forward base casting 22 and a rear base casting 23 spaced longitudinally apart. The rolls 22 are supported in bearing blocks 32 adjustably mounted within an upright frame 33 supported by a bracket 34 extending upwardly from the side 26 and guide shoulder 27 of the casting 22. The bearing blocks 32 are mounted for pass adjustment by nuts 36 and screws 37 through gearing 38 and hand-wheel 39. The rolls 12 are driven by gearing from a shaft 40 enclosed in a housing 42 seated against a shoulder 25 on top of the casting 22. The rolls 13 are mounted on a similar frame 43 on a bracket 44 fixed on top of the casting 22 and are driven from a shaft 47 through spindles 48. The inclined rolls 14 are similarly housed on a bracket 50 fixed to the inclined face 28 of the casting 23 and are similarly driven from shaft 51 and rolls 15 are similarly mounted and driven from shaft 51. The shafts 40, 54, 47, and 51 are gear driven from main shaft 55, or separate variable speed motors may drive each pair of rolls.
