Abstract

466,764. Rolling tubes &c. SKERRETT, H. N. (Timken Roller Bearing Co.) Oct. 3, 1936, No. 26828. [Class 83 (iv)] Rod or tube is thinned and elongated by a steeply inclined surface C of continuously revolving skew rolls between which the tube &c. passes. A solid billet or a tube X on a mandrel 60 is reduced between skewed conical rolls 6 which are so shaped as to provide an entering zone A, a zone B to feed the tube to a steeply inclined narrow reducing zone C, a shallow grooved zone D clear of the work to eliminate torsion, a zone E to feed and rotate the tube at the same speed as B and smooth out any ridges and also to cause the tube to balloon out clear of the mandrel for facilitating stripping and also a zone F to round the tube. Each of the three rolls 6 is mounted in a cradle 23 mounted between end plates 4, 5 and adjusted longitudinally by screw 75. The roll pass is adjusted at each end by worm screws 33, bearing on each end of the roll carrying cradle 23, and operated by sprockets adjusted by a hand wheel 68, operating the sprocket for all the roll passes at one end through a common sprocket chain 67. A feed trough 53 is adjustable at one end by bolt and slot 54a. The two end housings 4 and 5 and the rolls are removable from the base as a unit. To adjust the skew of the rolls the rear housing 5 has slots for the tie bolts 15 and so can be moved round relative to the plate 4, the roll cradle 23 being. mounted by spherical bearings in the side plates to allow movement. In a modification the rolls may be shaped as in Fig. 16 in which the single narrow zone C1 does most of the reducing. In Fig. 18, the single narrow zone C3 for reducing is not on the rolls but is on the mandrel instead. Steel or iron is hot rolled but copper or other soft metal may be cold rolled.
