Abstract

A metal slab 10 is rolled between a pair of grooved edging rolls 16, before passing to a planetary mill where it is rolled to sheet thickness, the rolls 16 each having two frustoconical surfaces 25 and 26 set at an included angle of 100-130 degrees to produce a convex edge on to the slab. The slab is passed from a furnace 12 through edges guides 20 to the edging rolls 16, any scale which is cracked by the rolls being removed by water sprays 21. Feed rolls 22 pass the slab to one or more pairs of planetary rolls 23. Metals such as low carbon steel, stainless steel, and titanium can be rolled by the process, the initial thickness of the slabs lying between 1À5 and 6À5 inch. The rolls 16 are conventionally driven and are adjustable to accommodate different widths of slab. Continuously cast slabs can conveniently be rolled by the apparatus.
