669,374. Making plates and sheets. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Aug. 4, 1950 [Aug. 15, 1949], No. 21181/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Rolling.-In a method of rolling metal sheet or strip, edge cracking is prevented by periodically machining the edges square between the rolling passes. In a rolling mill for metal strip 12 used in razor blades or hacksaw blades &c., the edges of the strip are ground square between the rolling passes by grinding-wheels 21 disposed on each side and which are adjustable in position to suit different widths of strip. The strip is guided horizontally by rolls 18 and vertically by rolls 11, 13, the latter being under the action of springs 15. The Provisional Specification refers to methods of preventing edge cracking by protecting the edges of the strip against the imposition of tensile stresses during rolling, and by treating the longitudinal edges prior to rolling so as to render them sufficiently ductile to withstand tensile stresses.
